At the end of the lesson you will be able to identify hazards near water, understand safety signs, and know rules for keeping safe near man made and natural bodies of water.
Natural vs. Man Made Bodies of Water
Natural water includes rivers, lakes and seas. Man made water includes swimming pools, canals, and fountains. Both can be dangerous if you are not careful.
Hazards in and Around Water
Hazards include slippery banks, deep water, sudden drop-offs, strong currents, and rubbish or sharp objects in the water.
Safety Signage: What to Look For
Safety signs use pictures and colours to warn you. Red means danger, yellow means caution, and blue or green means safe actions or information.
Common Water Safety Signs
Wear a lifejacket or swim only with adults. These signs tell you what you must do to stay safe.
Danger Signs
No swimming, deep water, strong currents, or thin ice. These signs tell you to keep away.

Always swim with an adult nearby.
Obey safety signs.
Never run near water.
Wear a lifejacket if told.
Know where you can and can't swim.
Remember: Stay Alert and Ask for Help
If you are ever unsure about safety near water, stop and ask an adult or lifeguard before you go near or in the water.
Never swim alone — be supervised by an adult, practise safe entries, ways to float and swim, read and abide by safety signage and lifeguard instructions, stay at a depth where you can keep your face above the water, recognise when it is not safe to be in the water (storm, no supervision, unclean water)
