Slide 1 - Tekstslide

On the picture right you see:
A
An artery on the right. A vein on the left.
B
Both are arteries.
C
An artery on the left. A vein on the right.
D
A capillary on the left. An artery on the right.

Slide 2 - Quizvraag

Muscle pumps:

Help arteries bring blood back to the heart.
B
Help veins bring blood back to the heart.
C
Help capillaries transport nutrients to organs.
D
All of the above.

Slide 3 - Quizvraag

The vessel on the left is a(n):

Vein
B
Capillary
C
Artery
D
Impossible to tell.

Slide 4 - Quizvraag

Which type of blood vessel has the highest blood pressure?

Slide 5 - Open vraag

Goals:
-I can describe the connection between high blood pressure and diet on the risk of cardiovascular disease.

-I can describe 2 ways of solving a blockage of a blood vessel.

-I can recognise a stroke from the physical warning signs.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Homework b
-Discuss exercises 18, 19 and 22.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

B5: cardiovacular diseases

-Blood pressure: high or low.
-Blockages: heart attack; stroke etc.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Low blood pressure
-Usually not much of a problem.
-Dizzyness; fainting; fatigue; light headaches.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

High blood pressure
-Walls of arteries develop tears.
-Cholesterol (fat) builds up in tears.
-nosebleeds; severe headaches; problems with vision.

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Blockages
-A blood clot or cholesterol plaque(prop) blocks a blood vessel.
-Cells of affected organ do not receive nutrients+ O2. Waste products also build up.

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Blockages
-Blockage in coronary artery: heart attack.
-Blockage in brain capillary or carotid artery(halsslagader): stroke.
-Blockage in lung: Pulmonary emboly

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Causes
-Unhealthy diet:
-Lots of fatty foods increase cholesterol level in blood.
-Too much salt increases blood pressure.
-Smoking causes constriction of vessels, which increases damage to arterial walls.
-Not enough exercise: higher blood pressure and weight.
-Genes which increase cholesterol level.

Medical solutions
(balloon) Angioplasty (with stent):
-insert balloon to widen artery. Place 'cage' to keep it open.

-Insert a vein from elsewhere in the body, around the blockage.
