What is iambic pentameter?

1. It is the stress put on the second syllable of an iamb in each line.
2. It is the stress put on the first syllable of an iamb in each line.

iambic pentameter 

pentameter: a line of 10 syllables. However, each line can be divided in 5 segments and these are called feet (penta = Greek )

Shall I / compare / thee to / a sum/ mer's day/

 iamb: there are five iambs of two syllables in every line of Sonnet 18. The second syllable is always stressed. compare = an iambic word

Imagery

Note that these are sound techniques and therefore may not be reflected in spelling, i.e. “do you like blue” is also considered assonance.
