Philip II & The Netherlands
  • Philip II isn't very liked in the Low Lands:
  1. He is even more ruthless against protestants
  2. The conflicts Philip II enters into are costly
    (higher taxes)
  3. Philip II continues the centralization project
  4. King Philip II sends Spanish nobles from Spain to the Netherlands

  • In 1566, 200 Dutch nobles hand over the nobleman's petition.
  • They request that protestants are treated better.

The Iconoclastic Outbreak
  • Because of the Edict of Blood the protestants are forced into the open air. --> hagenpreken
  • These meetings leads to groups of
    Calvinists attacking churches in
    1566.
    --> the Iconoclastic outbreak.

Alba & The Netherlands
  • Philip II is furious when he hears about this outbreak.
  • He sends the duke of Alba, to sort it out.
  • Alba is set three goals:
  1. To punish the perpetrators.
  2. To make sure every person in the Dutch
    provinces is a Catholic.
  3. To appoint a central government.

  • Many noblemen flee for Alba to other countries.
  •  He decides to economically punish the provinces aswell.
  • --> Tenth Coin.
  • Each Dutch citizen is ordered
    to pay extra taxes of 10% on
    products sold.
