Theorie literatuur (pp. 2-5 in reader)
  • Je leert voor de toets de theorie, en kan hier vragen over beantwoorden. Je kan de theorie ook toepassen op de short stories.
  • Bijvoorbeeld: leg uit wat een ‘flat character’ is? Of, wat hoort er allemaal bij ‘setting’?

She is the landlady and always tries to keep everyone talking!

"As polite as he was pale, and he always did his best to keep any ball rolling"
Miss Wicks
The oldest character. "She had knitted for seventy years, and looked good for another seventy" (r. 12-13)
In other words, she will continue knitting for a very very long time
Miss Bella
She was the young lovely, but not very smart.

"Bella was the boardinghouse lovely, but no one had taken advantage of the fact"(r.14-15)
Mr Calthrop
He was a middle-aged man, and liked to sleep. It is also said in the story that he walks in his sleep.

"Mr Calthrop, coming suddenly out of a middle-aged doze..." (r. 18)
"Mr Calthrop, in a split second, lost all inclination to doze" (r. 40)
Mr Penbury
Knows what happened to Mr Wainwright. He is the most intelligent of them all, but not necessarily liked by the rest of the boarders,

"Penbury always had a chilling effect. He possessed a brain, and since no one understood it when he used it, it was resented." (r. 25-26)
Mr Wainwright
The story begins with Mrs Mayton asking where Mr Wainwright has gone. He also has an annoying cough. 

"... I heard Mr Wainwright coughing, again across the passage -  that awful clicking sound it always ended with - well, I couldn't stand it anymore..." (r. 182-183)
