Narrative tenses
I can use
the past simple,
past continuous,
and past perfect
to tell a story that happened
in the past.


We use these to make sure we don't bore someone to death when describing a story & to make the sequence of events clear :)

Example - boring.
Last night, I walked home. I saw a car running very fast towards a red light. I looked at the driver. I saw him talking on the phone.
He didn't stop at the traffic light, and another car crashed into him.
The police arrived. The police asked what happened.
I told them that the driver didn't see the light bc he was on his phone.

He didn't stop at the light and another car crashed into him. When the police arrived, they asked me what had happened and I told them that the driver hadn't seen the traffic light bc he was using his phone.

Narrative tense

PAST SIMPLE = describe the main events in chronological order

PAST CONTINUOUS = to set the scene & to describe actions/situations in progress

PAST PERFECT = describe events that happened earlier in the past
Example - clear and rich!
Last night, I was walking home when I saw a car running very fast towards a red light. I looked at the driver and I could see that he was talking on the phone. Past simple
Form: second row irr verbs or: 
verb+ed (mind spelling> like+ed= liked)

Use: something from the past that is finished now

Dave walked to the classroom.
I went to school that day. (go, went, gone)

Past continuous
Form: past of to be (was/were) + verb + ing

Use: in past and focus is on duration / annoyance in past

They were studying for their English test.
He was making funny noises constantly.

Past perfect
Form: had + past participle
Past participle = 3e row irr verbs / verb+ed
Something that happened before something else in the past.

The tea had gone cold when we finally came down.
After she had done her homework, she watched TV.

Past perfect continuous - not often used
Form: had been + verb+ing

Something in the past before something else in the past, focussing on duration. 

I had been waiting for half an hour.
We had been studying for weeks when the test was cancelled.

More examples of the past perfect
= completed action which took place BEFORE another action in the past:
By the time we arrived at the cinema, the film had already started.

Narrative Tenses
Narrative tenses are used to tell a story or talk about events in the past.

Past simple: state and actions at a definite time in the past. ( Main events)
                                       I left university in 2010.
Past continuous: Things that were going on in the past. ( Background info)
                                      I was walking down the street when I suddenly heard a
                                      loud noise.
Past Perfect: to make clear that one action happened before another.
                                      I didn't have any money because I had lost my wallet.
