The rise of the patriots
Around 1780 problems in the Republic:
  • Economy was in decline 
       - VOC and WIC not that profitable anymore
       - Expensive wars with the English
       - Poverty and unemployment were increasing
  • People became critical of the regents and of the stadtholder: 
       Willem V, Prince of Oranje-Nassau
       - Regents only looked after their own interests
       - Willem V made the position of stadtholder hereditary
       - Willem V tried to increase his power
       - Willem V behaved like a king with absolute power

Patriots = people who protested against the power of the stadtholder

1781 Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol publishes his pamphlet  Aan het Volk van Nederland.

Wanted a democratic government, equal rights and less power for the stadtholder and regents.

Patriots wanted:
  • More political influence for the citizens
  • A constitution and fundamental rights

In the meantime patriots formed armies.

1787 Patriots tried to take over power.  

King of Prussia sent an army to violently remove the Patriots from the country and restores order.

The revolt failed. Many Patriots fled to France.
