Warm-up: Musical Statues

Dance to short music clips from different genres. When the music stops, freeze! Try to guess which genre was playing. Come and write the genre on the board.

What is a Music Genre?

A music genre is a style or category of music, such as pop, rock, jazz, or classical. Each genre has its own sound and instruments.

Rock Music

Rock is loud and energetic, with electric guitars and drums. Famous bands include The Beatles and Queen.

Jazz Music

Jazz has lots of improvisation and uses instruments like the saxophone and piano. It is smooth and creative.

Pop Music

Pop music is catchy, has a strong beat, and is often on the radio. Singers like Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran make pop songs.

Classical Music

Classical music is often played by orchestras and has composers such as Beethoven and Mozart. It’s dramatic and beautiful.

Hip Hop Music

Hip hop features rapping, strong beats and DJ scratching. Artists like Stormzy use powerful lyrics.

Country Music

Country music uses guitars, banjos, and tells stories. It has a friendly, twangy sound. Dolly Parton is a famous country singer.

Game 1: Genre Guess Who?

Listen to a music clip and guess which genre it is. Use cards to hold up your answer. Resource needed: genre cards for each group.

Game 2: Musical Genre Charades

Act out a music genre using moves and sounds (no words). Others guess the genre. Resource needed: slips of paper with genres written on them.

Pop is catchy and modern, rock is energetic and uses electric guitars.
