What is the difference between a
formal and informal email/letter?

Greeting formal letter/email

Don't know the name? --> Dear Sir/Madam,

                                                         Dear Madam,

                                                         Dear Sir,

Know the name? --> title (Mr, Mrs, Miss or Ms, Dr, etc.) and the family name

Mrs=married / Miss=unmarried / Ms=unknown married or not

Body formal letter

KISS - keep it short and simple

Break your message down into paragraphs (alinea's)

1. Why are you writing? What is the topic (onderwerp)?
   
2. What do you want the reader to do/know?
3. Closing = conclusion/summary/ suggest possible follow-up 

Try to keep your sentences (zinnen) readable.

Closing formal letter/email

Know the name?              -->  Yours sincerely, 

Don't know the name?  -->  Yours faithfully,

Know the person?           -->  Kind regards,

Greeting,

Reason why you are writing.

Explanation. What do you want the reader to know? 

Paragraph 3 is usually a summary, a suggestion or a question.

Closing sentence.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to complain about a broken charger that I bought with my laptop in your store on November 1, 2023.

The laptop was working fine, but will not charge. I think the charger is the problem.

Since I bought the laptop a week ago I assume that there is a warranty. Can I come by to exchange the adapter for a new one?
