Slide 6 - Tekstslide

People who take prescription drugs without a prescription are committing drug misuse, and these substances can be psychoactive, leading to addiction or even overdose. However, I don’t think they should face the same punishment as people who take illegal drugs, because the intention and risk level can be different. Instead, there should be legal consequences to stop misuse, but also support and education to help prevent addiction and protect people’s health.

✅ Arguments for the legalisation of cannabis
  • Medical benefits: Research shows cannabis can relieve chronic pain, epilepsy, and symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
  • Self-medication: With long GP and hospital waiting times, it may help people manage pain or anxiety when other treatments are unavailable.
  • Regulation and safety: Legalising cannabis would allow the government to control quality, reduce contamination, and monitor dosage, making use safer.
  • Economic benefits: Legal sales could bring in tax revenue, create jobs, and reduce the cost of policing minor drug offences.
  • Reduced criminal activity: Legalisation could weaken the illegal drug trade and reduce drug-related crime.
  • Personal freedom: Some argue that responsible adults should have the right to choose what they consume, as long as it doesn’t harm others.

❌ Arguments against the legalisation of cannabis

  • Health risks: Cannabis is a psychoactive drug that can lead to addiction, mental health problems (such as anxiety or psychosis), and impaired memory or concentration.
  • Gateway effect: Regular use might lead some individuals to try stronger illegal drugs.
  • Public safety: Legal use could increase drug driving and accidents, affecting community safety.
  • Impact on young people: Legalisation might make cannabis seem harmless, increasing teen use and brain development issues.
  • Strain on healthcare: Increased use could lead to more people needing mental health or addiction services, adding pressure to the NHS.
  • Moral and social concerns: Some people believe it sends the wrong message about drugs and responsibility.
