The Ring (not the movie)

Reading and a bit of grammar

Unit 4 - Dilemmas

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Open your book 'Think' on page 42.
Read the text at the bottom the page.
The story continues in the bottom left of page 43.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

What did Billy do with the ring? Answer in English.

Slide 3 - Open vraag

For the next eight slides...
... you will see sentences that could have been said by the people in the true story. The sentences are not to be found literally in the story.

For every sentence, mention who you think said it.
If you missed it before: the text continues at the bottom of p 43.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Who said, "If only a little good luck came my way"?

Slide 5 - Open vraag

Who said, "What's that in my cup"?

Slide 6 - Open vraag

Who said, "I'd like to buy it"?

Slide 7 - Open vraag

Who said, "It's a lot of money, but I can't"?

Slide 8 - Open vraag

How about, "I was here a few days ago"?

Slide 9 - Open vraag

And, "I can't believe he didn't sell my ring"?

Slide 10 - Open vraag

Who do you think said, "I think that's a great idea"?

Slide 11 - Open vraag

And, "We never thought we'd see you again"?

Slide 12 - Open vraag

This might be difficult...
Again, open Think on page 42 and go to the text at the bottom of the page. Then do the exercises on the next slides.

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Complete the sentences from the story with the correct forms of the verbs.
If Billy _____ (look) up, he _____ (see) a young lady on her way to work.

Slide 14 - Open vraag

Again, use the text for this one:
If he _____ (not do) the right thing, he _____ (not see) his sisters again.

Slide 15 - Open vraag

In the sentences, we used 'had ...', followed by 'would have ...'.

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Can you explain in what situations we use 'had ...' + 'would have ...'?
You can also give an example.

Slide 17 - Open vraag

Third conditional
We use 'had ...' + 'would have ...' for something that could have happened in the past, but didn't. This is called the third conditional.

If I had known that, I would have studied!

Please note (again) that we don't use 'would' in the part of the sentence that has 'if'.

Slide 18 - Tekstslide

Fill in the right forms.
1. Sarah _____ (see) the ring if she _____ (look) in the cup.

Slide 19 - Open vraag

2. Billy _____ (keep) the ring if Sarah _____ (not return).

Slide 20 - Open vraag

3. Sarah _____ (not raise) so much money if she _____ (not put) her story online.

Slide 21 - Open vraag

For the next three slides...
... complete the sentences so that they are true for you.

Slide 22 - Tekstslide

Slide 23 - Open vraag

Slide 24 - Open vraag
