Presentation, part II: Discussion
After your presentation, you will discuss one of your statements with your partner for five minutes.

Structure: 
  • Introduce your side + explain your main argument. 
  • React to other side with counterargument
  • Ask each other questions, react to responses
  • Conclude by summarizing arguments + final statement
  • Class decides winner of the debate

Each part of the debate is characterized by specific language. There are specific phrases to help structure what you want to say.

1. Work in pairs
2. Pick a topic
3. Student A starts with an argument, Student B refutes it using one of the expressions from the worksheet and gives a counterargument, Student A then disagree with this and gives another counterargument, and so forth. 
4. Winner is the students who can keep going the longest.

  • Swimming in the ocean is better than swimming in a public pool. 
  • Alcohol should be illegal.
  • Dogs make better companions than cats.
  • A parent shouldn't pierce a baby's ears.

  1. Massive environmental destruction will continue until a global law is in place.
  2. Corporations schould be prosecuted under international criminal law for committing ecocide.
  3. An ecocide law will mean the end of corporate immunity.

  1. Illegal fireworks will increase because consumer fireworks will be banned.
  2. It is good that fireworks are banned because the hospital cannot cope with the accidents.
  3. It is good to be critical of traditions.
