You will be able to recognise tenses used in sentences so that you can turn the sentence into reported speech.

Used to & would - for past habits

I used to / would go to the beach everyday after school in the summer. 

NB: No would when it refers to a situation/ or a state in the past 

He used to be a famous singer >> He  would be a famous singer

My house used to be a church >> My house would be a church

 Direct: June said, "It is my birthday today"

      Indirect: June said that it was her birthday that day.

Pronoun:  My  >>> becomes >>>  her

Tense:   is  >>> becomes >>>  was

Time word:   today >>> becomes >>>  that day

Indirect speech - Hoe ziet dat eruit? 

• 'I am late for school!' --> She said that she was late for school. 
• 'We have visited her.' --> They mentioned they had visited her. 
• 'You are not listening!' --> He said that I was not listening. 
  
• 'They bought a house.' --> You told me that they had bought a house.
• 'He will be late.' --> She complained that he would be late. 

Indirect speech -Hoe doe je dat?

Je moet de werkwoorden van de zin steeds één stapje terug in de tijd zetten. 

• Present simple --> Past simple 
• Present perfect --> Past perfect
• Present continuous --> Past continuous
• Past simple --> Past perfect
• hulp ww naar verleden tijd (will -> would, may -> might, can -> could, must-> had to)

Time changes

Last night >>> the night before, the previous night

Yesterday >>> the day before / the previous day

Tomorrow >>> the next day, the following day

Today >>> that day

Questions in reported speech

Simon - " What are you doing?"

Simon asked me what I was doing. 

Wh - questions come back in the reported speech

Debby - " Are you meeting up with your friends later?"

Debby asked me if/whether I was meeting up with my friends later.

"I live in Paris with my family," she said.

Start off with: She said that..... (add a full stop)

"We are watching a movie at the cinema," they said.
Start off with: They said that ......
(Add a full stop at the end.)

"Can you help me with this difficult math problem?" he asked.

"We didn’t see the accident because we arrived later," they said.
(use a contraction)

"I will finish the project by tomorrow," she said.
