Tense divisions
Every basic tense (present, past & future) is divided up into more specific varieties:
- simple
- continuous
- perfect
-perfect continuous

All structures can be affirmative, negative, or a question

Present
Simple: ww (s.h.it: + s)
- express habits or general truths: I bike to school every day.
- describe future events part of a plan/arrangement: The plane arrives at 8am tomorrow.
Continous: to be + ww-ing
- describe an action going on at the time of speaking/writing: I am doing a quiz right now.

Perfect: have/has + ww-ed OR past participle (irreg. verbs)
1. past action not defined by time of occurence: She may have gone shopping.
2. action that started in the past and has continued up until now: She has lived there for 2 years.
Perfect continuous: have /has + been + ww-ing
- action which started in the past and may (not) be complete: He has been studying since 15:00.

She is talking on the telephone right now.
They have worked there for 2 years.
She has been studying psychology since 2015.

Past
Simple: ww-ed OR own spelling (irregular verbs)
- describe an action already completed: I went to Egypt in 2015.
Continuous: was/were + ww-ing
1. express uncompleted action in the past: Everyone was shouting.
2. describe persistent habits of the past: They were always fighting.

Perfect: had + ww-ed OR had + own spelling (irregular verbs)
- describes a completed action that happened before sth else did: 
After he had finished his homework, he went to football practice.
Perfect continuous: had + been + ww-ing
- She had been working at that company for 3 years when it suddenly went bankrupt.

I had already done the dishes when my mom came home.
He had been lying to his parents for years when they finally found out about his bad grades.
We were best friends all through high school.

Future
Simple: will/shall + ww
- express action/circumstance that hasn't happened yet: I will eat sushi tomorrow.
Continuous: will/shall + be + ww-ing
1. express planned events: You will be meeting your friends tomorrow.
2. express what will be going on at some time in the future: I will be asking questions later.
Perfect: will/shall + have + ww-ed/own spelling (irreg): You will have taken the test by then.
Perfect continuous: will/shall + have + been + ww-ing: I will have been watching tv for 3 hours by then.

EXTRA: to be going to + ww
- We are going to be sore tomorrow because of this workout!

!! Often there is more than 1 option !!

Which tenses as future?
Future simple: The train will leave at 5pm next Thursday.
Present simple: The train leaves at 5pm next Thurday.
Present continuous: The train is leaving at 5pm on Thursday.
To be going to: The train is going to leave at 5pm on Thursday.

The future tense functions best with an indication of future time (say when something will happen!).
