Starter: Read the text

Congratulations! It sounds like you'll be heading to South America. Write down all the questions you have for the organisation, so you can go on the trip and be well-prepared.

You're on the trip. What possible questions will you have during the trip?

Asking Questions: Theory

• Good readers ask question before, during and after reading
  
• Asking questions clarifies the meaning of the text
• We get a greater understanding of the text
• We could look up answers that we didn't get from the text, to extend our knowledge 

Explicit questions:

• Answers that can be found in the text

Implicit questions

• Answers that are formed from prior knowledge
• Answers that require further investigations
• Answers that come from your natural curiosity 

Putting strategy into practise

1. Choose a text from ITunesU at your level: Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced. 
2. Write down questions pre-reading, during reading and after reading
3. Write down the answers (or look them up, if they are not in the text)

Tips: 

• Look at the title, headings, pictures, etc to think of questions you want answered
• What background knowledge do you have and what extra information do you hope to get from the text?
• After reading: answer all your questions with help from the text

Example questions:

• What can I learn from reading this text?
• What is the main point that the author is trying to make?
• What is the tone of the article?
• What more do I want to know about ...?

Evaluation:
What makes the reading strategy 'asking questions' useful?

• Read two texts from mirror.co.uk (see next slide and ITunesU for link)
• Prepare questios before, during and after reading
• Read novel of your choice
