modeling and simulation

What is a simulation and why are they used?
A
A simulation is a giant model in motion for a test.
B
A simulation uses one or more models to imitate how those models might function in a real life situation.

Models can be helpful in scientific investigations because
A
may not be possible to work with the real thing.
B
they can be smaller and more manageable than the real thing.
C
they can be safer to work with than the real thing.
D
all of the above

Slide 2 - Quizvraag

Which comes first, the model or the simulation?
A
The two are unrelated and can be created in any order.
B
They are created at the same time because they are pretty much the same thing.
C
The model is created first because a simulation needs models to run.
D
Simulation is created first

Advantages of modelling and simulation
  • Can be safer and cheaper than the real world.
  • Able to test a product or system works before building it.
  • Can use it to find unexpected problems.
  • Able to explore ‘what if…’ questions.
  • Can speed things up or slow them down to see changes over long or short periods of time.

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Disadvantages of modelling and simulation
  • Mistakes may be made in the programming or rules of the simulation or model.
  • The cost of a simulation model can be high.
  • The cost of running several different simulations may be high.
  • Time may be needed to make sense of the results.
  • People’s reactions to the model or simulation might not be realistic or reliable.

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

What are faulty and hidden assumptions?
Too many characteristics are included the model may become large and difficult to manipulate.
Example: An engineer designing a metal bridge assumes that color of the bridge is not relevant to stability. however color of the bridge influence temperature and so on. This is the hidden assumptions.
