reported speech
To talk about something someone said in the past as opposed to what they literally said.
Example:  Patrick said: 'I am living the dream'.
 Patrick explained (that) he was living the dream.

Personal pronouns: He, she, it, we
Example: Steven said. ‘I love that girl!’
Steven said (that) he loved that girl!’

present simple - past simple
"Can you help me" - He asked if I could help him
present continuous - past continuous
"What are you doing?" - She asked what I was doing
past simple - past perfect
"I made a huge mistake" - He admitted that he had made a huge mistake
present perfect - past perfect
"You've done a good job" - She said I had done a good job 
Present perfect continous - past perfect continuous 
"What have you been saying about me?" - He asked what I had been saying about him

Exception to backshifting
If you report something that is still true you usually use the same verb tense (don't have to backshift).
Example: "Sorry, but that's the wrong address"
I told them that's the wrong address

"I'll meet you at the cinema"
He said he'll meet us at the cinema

Changing of adverbial of time
Example:
'I met Justin yesterday.
Paul said (that) he had met Justin the day before.

Maria said, 'My sister and I will stop running right now'.
Maria said that her sister and she would stop running at that instant.

Change the direct speech into reported speech. Use 'she said' at the beginning of each answer. It's the same day, so you don't need to change the time expressions.
