In which social or historical contexts will you situate the previous terms? Give examples.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Even though there have been, unfortunately, plenty of cases of racial segregation all through history, there are two examples in the 20th century that may help us understand better the context in Noughts and Crosses, the novel we are reading: segregation laws in some Southern States in the United States of America and Apartheid in South Africa. Choose one of these two historical contexts and do some research about the situation.

• When and why did segregation start?
• Give examples of segregating laws that were applied and explain how they affected the life of the population (both groups of population: segregators and segregates)
•Were these laws legally approved?
•How long did the situation last? What were the turning points that made it start to change?
•How is the situation nowadays in those countries?

Bare bones
Working in pairs, but drawing individually, design a timeline which reconstructs the central argument of the author. Use discourse markers (so, therefore, etc).

Where do we find value judgements of the author? Look for clues in the text.
