Present perfect continuous 
(I have been doing)

When to use it?

  • Something started in the past, has recently stopped and you are interested in the results of it.
  • Something started in the past and is still relevant/ happening.

How to use it?
  • Have/ has + been +ww -ing

Option 1: pres. perf. cont. means 'recently' or 'lately' 
Option 2: use an indication of time --> Nadruk ligt op hoe lang iets duurt

1. I am learning Swedish. I started classes in January. 
  •  I ..... since January.
2. There is paint on Kate's clothes and she just stepped off the ladder.

Past perfect (I had done)
When to use it?

  • To describe something happened in the past before something else happened in the past.

How to use it?

Had + past participle (3rd row)

Sarah and Paul went to the same party., but they didn't see each other. Paul left the party at 10.30 and Sarah arrived at 11.

So when Sarah arrived at the party, Paul wasn't there.

Something happened in the past: "Sarah arrived at the party"

This is the starting point of the story. Then, we want to talk about something that happened before this time. 

"When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul had already gone home."

Word order
Verb | Object | Place | Time
  • Verb + object normally go together, don't put other words between them
  • Verb + place normally go together - if the verb has an object, it goes in the middle
  • Time the beginning or end of a sentence, but behind Place

2. use - yesterday. - my phone - I didn't

4. Don't - anything - on the table. - put
5. to work - Ben walks - every morning.

7. We - at the airport - need to be - by 8 o' clock.
