Expectiations/Goal this period
  • At the end of this period, you know how to tackle the CE English exam
  • You will know what kinds of texts and questions to expect
  • You will practiced with the various text and question types and have actively applied the tips given in class to the texts
  • You will have completed at least 1 full exam (2021 tv1)
  • You will familiarize yourself with the linking words and vocabulary in your reader

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Expectations/Goals
What do I expect from you?
1. Take the lessons and the homework seriously - the more you do now, the less time you need in May (think of all your other exams)
2. You take an active role in your own learning process - this is not an exam you can study for, so practicing and reflecting on your own work and mistakes is crucial!
3. Get help when needed - if you need assistance, let me know. However, you must do your work, don't expect me to help you if you haven't done anything.

Concrete tips to get in your system
  • Start off each text looking for the main problem/topic (use the title, any headings and pictures and the 1st question to help you)
  • Read the question first, then the text
  • Take your time
  • Don’t look up every word - use what you know
  • Beware of any obvious answers/too good to be true
  • Get in the habit of highlighting: linking words, main problems, important factors

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Linking words general info
  • Linking words: use a separate highlighter
  • Guide you through the text: be wary of changes in the main problem
  • Positive/negative: in what way is the problem being presented?
  • Do the answers in a question line up with the pos/neg from the main problem/what’s happening in the paragraph?
  • When in doubt, use the linking words to guide you back to main problem
  • Which answer relates most closely to main problem?

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Going from Dutch/English and vice-versa

  • Open questions: in Dutch
  • True/false: in Dutch
  • Best strategy?

  • If you’re going from English to Dutch, put the English in your OWN words first IN ENGLISH and then translate to Dutch
  • If you’re going from Dutch to English, reword in English in your own words and then go through the text - write down key words for yourself

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Gapped text

  • Lot of approaches but rule of thumb: stay close to the gap and look for linking words!
  • If at beginning or end of a paragraph: don’t forget about the line before/after!
  • HIGHLIGHT!

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Main thing to keep in mind

Can you find the answer from the question in the text both:
           1. LITERALLY - the same concept/idea HAS to be in there. Example from Here to Stay - lineage vs. history
           2. COMPLETELY - the WHOLE idea has to be in there. Lots of times they’ll give one obvious point with one that’s not in there - be careful!

Double check this at all times!
