At the end of this lesson, you will understand and know how to use conditionals (if-clauses)

Do you remember, what conditionals do?

What are conditionals?

• A sentence that is made up of an if-clause (condition) and a main clause (result) 
• We also call them 'if sentences'
• Describes a situation that might happen or might have happened
• There are 4 types of conditionals and they are made using different English verb tenses.

Zero Conditional

• Real factual situations
• (if + present simple, ... present simple)
• e.g. If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
• If it rains, the soil gets wet

If he ___ (touch) the fire, he ___ (get) burned.

If you ___(freeze) water, it ___ (become) a solid.

First conditional

• Possible future action
• (if + present simple, ... will + infinitive)
• e.g. If it rains tomorrow, we'll go to the cinema
• If Mrs Damstra goes to the shop, she will buy a coke

Examples

• If you like warm weather, you will like Florida or California.
• If you go to California, you'll be able to go to great beaches.
• if you go by plane, it will take about 6 hours.

If she __ (get) good grades, she __(go) to university.

Second conditional

• Unreal, improbable situations
• (if + past simple, .... would + infinitive)
• E.g. If I won the lottery, I would buy a mansion

Third  conditional

• Unreal past situations
• (if + past perfect,... would have + past participle)
• E.g. If I had left earlier, I would have arrived on time.
  
• He would not have met her, if he had stayed at home

If I ___ (save) my money, I ___ (buy) a PlayStation 5.

If he ___(not take) the job, he __(go) travelling.
