Plants have two transport systems of tubes or vessels, name both of them.

What is the main function of stems?

Open your workbook on page 19. 

While listening right down the translations.

The 2 tranport vessels

Xylem: tranports water and minerals (mineralen).

Phloem: transports water and food from the place were it is made (the leaves) towards the parts that need it.

Together these vessels are organised --> vascular bundles (vaatbundels)

Woody vs herbaceous plants

Woody plants (houtachtige planten): contain a lot of wood. That helps the plant stand up straight.

herbaceous plants  (kruidachtige planten): do not contain wood. Water in the stem helps the plant stand up straight.

Nodes and internodes

Nodes (knoop): The place were the leaf is attached to the stem.

Internodes (lid): The spaces between nodes.

Axillary bud/literal bud and terminal bud

Axillary bud/literal bud (okselknop): space were new leaves, side branches or flowers grow out of.

terminal bud (eindknop): last bud on a branch. The branch will grow in length.

Leaf scar

In the winter( and fall /autumn) leaves fall of and leave a leaf scar (bladlitteken).
