Let's start with basic sentence structure

Basic: Subject, verb, object, manner, place, time

All sentences have the first two (Subject, verb) 
and can have a combination of the rest or all of them.

My dad reads the newspaper
Sally walks to school today

Sentence structure
  • Subject > The boy
  • Verb > ran
  • Object > with the football
  • Manner > quickly
  • Place > down the street 
  • Time > a few minutes ago.

The boy ran with the football quickly down the street a few minutes ago

Where do they go?

Subject - here - verb . I usually wake up at 7.

Except when there is a form of to be.
I am always late for school. 
She is never going to buy me a Christmas present.

When there is more than one verb
I can usually spot a good football player
He has totally forgotten his appiontment
I am absolutely losing this card game
He could never wait in a queue.

Adverbs can go after the first verb, if the first verb is a helping verb (aka auxilary verb - be, have or a modal verb)

Adverbs of Manner
Very, really, hard, fast, slowly, incredibly, terribly: geven aan hoe iets gebeurt.

  1. Vóór het woord waar ze iets van zeggen (een bijvoeglijk naamwoord of bijwoord)
       He is very friendly. 
       The car journey was really long.
   2. Over een werkwoord: Op het einde van de zin of vóór het hoofdwerkwoord
       He sang the song terribly.
       They nervously waited for the President.

Nooit tussen het werkwoord en het voorwerp!  
I grabbed quickly my bag > I grabbed my bag quickly or I quickly grabbed my bag.

Adverbs of Place & Time
  • Plaats voor tijd bij het eind van de zin.
      The train leaves from platform 2 at nine o'clock.
  • Als het tijdstip extra belangrijk is dan mag tijd ook vooraan.
      Tomorrow, he has to be on time for work!  
      (This is with emphasis on the time) 

  • Van groot naar klein met plaats en tijd
       I'll meet you in Utrecht at McDonalds on Friday at ten o'clock.
