  • Alfred the Great was retrospectively chosen as the founder of Oxford University.
  • Oxford university is also known as the oldest university in the English-speaking world.

Education in Oxford
  • Teaching already took place at Oxford University in some form in 1096. In 1167, the university was finally actually founded.
  • In 1920, not only men, but also women were admitted to full membership of the University. The first all-male colleges admitted women in 1974. St Hilda's College was the last to admit both men and women, which they did in 2008.
