The Congress of Vienna
After Napoleon was defeated, European countries decided:
- Europe had to go back to the estates society = restoration 
- France should be surrounded by powerful countries
- Kings help each other out when there would be a revolution 
- The Netherlands would get a monarchy again

= great love for your own country, people and culture.
characteristics:
  • the idea your country and people are better than others (=superiority)
  • the idea that each people is entitled to their own nation 
  • militarism: glorifying war: the idea that war is a good way to resolve conflicts between states.

Nationalism developed during the 19th century because the Napoleonic wars made people feel connected.  

A lot of people wanted a country with just their own people.

Germany had always been a large, divided empire. 
In 1871, Germany united. 

Effect: a new power balance in Europe.

A lot Belgians (from the south of the NL)
did not agree with the Dutch king. 

Because of this, they started to revolt. 
The Belgians succeeded and got their own nation 
in 1830.
