What do you already know about the rules of grammar?

Sentence Structure

A complete sentence has a subject and a verb. It expresses a complete thought.

• Which sentence is complete? "Ran to the store." or "I ran to the store."

• What is the subject in this sentence? "The cat sleeps on the couch."

Capitalization Rules

Always capitalize the first word of a sentence and proper nouns like names of people, places, and days.

• Which word needs a capital letter? "We went to london last summer."

• Should the word "Monday" be capitalized?

Punctuation Basics

Periods end sentences. Commas separate items. Question marks ask questions. Exclamation points show excitement.

• Where should the comma(s) go? "I like apples bananas and grapes."

• Which sentence needs a question mark? "I love pizza" or "Do you love pizza"

Parts of Speech

Nouns name things. Verbs show action. Adjectives describe. Adverbs tell how. Pronouns replace nouns.

• What part of speech is the word "quickly"?

• Is "dog" a noun, verb, or adjective?

• Which word is a verb? "She runs fast."

Tenses

Past tense tells what already happened. Present tense describes what is happening now. Future tense describes what will happen.

• What is the past tense of "jump"?

• Choose the correct verb: "Tomorrow, she will (walk/walked) to school."

• What is the tense of this sentence? "I am doing the dishes."
