Trade in the 17th century
Overseas trade brings prosperity
Maps and instruments needed to determine the positions at sea
Use knowledge from mathematics and physics
Because of the overseas trade, people gained knowledge about the people, plants and animals in distant countries

Science in the 17th century
In the past, people studied nature by studying ancient texts
People now start investigate nature themselves
Why? Curiosity (new animals, plants, cultures), practical use (for journeys)
Lots of new inventions (clock, telescope, microscope etc.)
Knowledge spreads fast (printing press)
= Scientific revolution

Slide 7 - Open vraag
How to approach explain question ?
Look at the question: what kind of explain question is it?
Explain how / why / your answer / X. Then look at what you need to explain.
Start looking for information:
First your own knowledge, then your notes, then the textbook/source
Formulate your answer: repeat part of the question, add a signal word (because), then add the information that you found.
Slide 8 - Tekstslide
How to look up information: textbook
Look at pictures/sources in the paragraph: what do they tell me about the subject?
Look at the titles of subheads: what is this subhead about? -> Search for the topic that your question is about
Look at bold (key)words: what do they mean? What do they tell me about the subhead?
Look at the first two sentences and the last sentence of a indention (= alinea) to find the core information of each one.
Start searching within the indentions for your answer by reading the whole indention
Slide 9 - Tekstslide
How to look up information: a source
Look at the source: what kind of source is it? A picture/painting, a text, a table? A combination of text and a picture?
Read the caption of the source. This tells you a bit more about the source and may help you find the answer.
In case of a piece of text: start reading the source. After you read the source, take a look at the question again: what information do I need to find?
Read the source again, but this time more careful to look at details.
