Creative Clay Weaving: Patterns and Textures

What is Weaving?

Weaving is creating patterns by interlacing materials. Examples: fabric, baskets, nature.

Clay as a Weaving Material

Clay, unlike fabric, is solid but can be woven by cutting into strips.

Step 1 – Preparing the Clay

Roll out a 1 cm thick clay slab. Smooth but not dry. Cut a base shape.

Step 2 – Creating Strips for Weaving

Cut even strips. Experiment with straight or wavy lines. Add textures.

Step 3 – Weaving the Strips

Place base strips vertically. Weave new strips over and under. Press gently.

Step 4 – Adding Creative Touches

Shape into a bowl, tile, or sculpture. Add decor like flowers or initials.

Drying & Finishing

Let clay dry slowly. Once dry, paint or glaze. Show a finished piece.
