ATACAMA DESERT GOALS

1. You can name 3 reasons that cause drought in the Atacama desert.
2. You can explain how mountain ranges influence precipitation by using the words windward side and leeward side (GG 49).
3. You can explain how ocean currents influence precipitation.

• Explain why the north of Chile is very dry, while the south is very wet. Use the terms prevailing wind, windward side and leeward side

 Explain why the west coast of South America is a lot drier than the east coast.

2. For each temperature factor you can explain how it influences temperature in a certain place (G38, G42, G43, G44, G45, G46).
   

TEMPERATURE FACTORS

Why is it warm or cold somewhere?

1. Latitude

The closer you are to the equator, the warmer it is.

2. Altitude

The higher, the colder.

3. Land or sea

• Land heats up and cools down quicker than water.
  
• Land and water influence the temperature of the air above it.
  

4.Onshore/

offshore wind

• This factor only applies to places close to the sea.
• Onshore wind moderates temperature (cool summers, mild winters), while offshore winds cause bigger temperature differences.

5. Ocean currents

Warm current -> warmer air

Cold current -> colder air

6. Location of 

    mountain

    ranges

Mountain ranges can block prevailing winds, so they can be a dividing line between 2 climates.
