What is a colony?

Colonization of America
After the conquests, the colonization of America began.
America was known as a gold country.

Motives (reasons to do something) for the colonization and migration:

Economic: To make money (silver and gold mines, plantations)
Religious: Conversion, converting Indians to the Catholic faith.

Large parts of Central and South America were colonized by the Spaniards.

Colonists often entered into relationships with Indian women and had children: the emergence of a mixed society.

Through colonization, the Europeans spread their culture outside Europe (Europeanisation)

Plantations

The settlers established plantations.
These large scale agriculture companies made a lot of capital
They let natives work for them as slaves:  this was heavy work.

17th century: tobacco, cocoa, coffee
