Climate vs Weather:
Climate is the usual weather in a place over many years.
Example: Ireland is usually wet and mild.
It is different from weather, which tells us what it’s like today.
Example: The weather today is cloudy.
Which is an example of Climate?
The weather today is sunny.
Spain is normally hot and sunny.
Today is cloudy.
Yesterday was windy.
Which is an example of Weather?
Carlow was sunny this week.
Antartica has an arctic climate
The equator has a tropical climate.
Ireland's weather is mild and wet.
Types of Climate:
There are six main climate types:
Mediterranean.
Polar.
Tropical.
Temperate.
Mountainous.
Arid.
Mediteranean Climate:
Mild, wet winters and warm dry summers with plenty of sunshine.
Examples: Spain and Italy.
Polar Climate:
Long, cold winters with temperatures barely above freezing. Often very windy too.
Examples: Antartica.
Tropical Climate:
The sun shines around the equator, making the area hot and humid. Rainforests are found here with heavy rain all year round.
Examples: South America, Equator.
Temperate Climate:
Cool winters and mild summers with moderate rainfall all year round.
Examples: Ireland, France, North America.
Mountainous Climate:
The temperature gets lower the higher you climb. The Alps are covered in snow 6 months of the year. Mountains normally get more rain than flat areas.
Examples: Alps, Himalayas, Mt. Everest.
Arid Climate:
Deserts are normally found in arid climates. They are the driest places on earth. Most are very hot during the day and cold at night because of the lack of cloud.
Examples: Sahara desert. Australia.
