There are three types of technology for secondary storage - each with its advantages and disadvantages

Magnetic best in stationary devices, reliable and cheapest for high storage solutions - not very portable

Optical is portable, cheap and good for multimedia and small backups.  Can be scratched and damages easily.  Slowest access speeds

Solid state - while the most expensive, offers highest read/write speeds and is still large in capacity, portable and reliable.
