Betrekkelijke bijzinnen (relative clauses)

- Als je extra informatie of iets wilt geven, gebruik je een betrekkelijke bijzin. 

The men are heroes.

The men who put out the fire are heroes. 

Betrekkelijke bijzinnen (relative clauses)

- Meestal begint dit met who, which of that. 

We missed the train. 

We missed the train which goes to London. 

Who - personen

Which - dingen

That - bij personen, dieren en dingen. 

(That heeft dezelfde betekenis als who en which maar is informeler).

This is the bank
.........
was robbed.

Now you're just somebody ..... I used to know.

Betrekkelijke bijzinnen (relative clauses)

Soms geeft een bijzin alleen extra informatie: je kunt de bijzin weglaten zonder dat de betekenis van de zin echt verandert. 

Je gebruikt dan nooit that, maar altijd who of which.

Franklin, who is my nephew, is younger than I am.

                       Franklin is younger than I am.

My car, which is almost falling apart, is the bane of my existence. 

                        My car is the bane of my existence. 

Betrekkelijke bijzinnen (relative clauses)

Soms is de bijzin nodig om te begrijpen over wie of wat de zin gaat. In zo’n bijzin kun je who, which of that vaak weglaten.

     This is the man (who) I saw in the park.

     Here is the hat (that) I bought in New York.
