Present Perfect

Present Perfect: have/has verb+ed or past participle (3rd irregular verb)


  • An action/event that happened in the past and is relevant in the present = iets in het verleden is gebeurd waarvan je nu het resultaat zien => She has broken her leg. (= she's wearing a cast now :()


  • Situations that started in the past and continue up to now = iets in het verleden is begonnen en nog steeds doorgaat => They have taught at this school for 5 years now.


  • Life experiences / not relevant or important WHEN it happened = Levenservaringen / niet relevant of belangrijk WANNEER het gebeurde
    => Have you finished all your work? (notice the past participle in both questions & negatives)
    => Tim hasn't travelled to the USA yet.

  • For = to show duration of a period of time = gebruik je bij een periode:​ Two weeks, five minutes, 6 years​

  •                                          I have had my laptop for one week.

  • => To create a question: use FOR HOW LONG + have + past participle (verbED / 3rd column) = For how long have you had your laptop?

with ALREADY (= al): Serena has already retired.

with (N)EVER (= (n)ooit): Have you ever played baseball? 

                                         I have never played baseball.

with ALWAYS (= altijd): They have always done well.

= these are written in the middle of the Present Perfect!
