The Passive
The passive voice is used when the 'do-er' of the action is unknown or unimportant:
They built this church in 1709. - This church was built in 1709
OR
When the do-er of the action is very important, strange or special:
The teacher bullied me. - I was bullied by the teacher.

Every tense has its own version of the passive

I love my mom.
I loved my mom.
I have loved my mom.
I had loved my mom.
corresponds with:


My mom is loved.
My mom was loved.
My mom has been loved.
My mom had been loved.

He is opening the door.
He will open the door.
He will have opened the door.
The door will be opened.

When you turn an active sentence into a passive, you use 'to be' + past participle (volt. dw).
She is making a lovely cake.

is making - present continuous
present cont. van 'to be'- is being

A lovely cake is being made (by her).

You can make two passive sentences:

My mom was given a gift (by me). (IO)
A gift was given to my mom (by me). (DO)
