Element 7 - Child Development
Session 12

T - level in Education & Early Years

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Learning objectives
By the end of the session, all learners will be able to:
  1. Understand key numeracy and literacy skills in Early Years.
  2. Explain how to support numeracy and literacy skills for children and young people.
  3. Create a literacy based or numeracy based activity to support a child of a specific age.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Wordsearch
Word searches are often used for all different
age range, it is a great way for children to
learn and practice spelling.

Can you complete the word search?

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Numeracy skills
Group mind map

What strategies / activities can we use to support children in engaging in each of these activities?

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Numeracy skills
When playing in the role play encourage children to count the items of play in their shopping baskets or encouraging children to count pieces of fruit in their bowl during snack.
During circle time count how many boys and girls are at nursery?
Introduce number songs into your routine, encourage children to use their fingers to count with
When putting coat on count how many buttons
Plan a baking session let the children weight the ingredients
Talk about the different structures children make from the large blocks, use mathematical language, for example: big, small, tall, short
Make a height chart and let children measure themselves

Role of the Early Years practitioner
Commentary - This is where the practitioner will talk to the children to see what they are doing.
Questioning - Asking the child questions to encourage them to think about how and what they are doing.
Repetition - Repeating concepts and words, for example: a practitioner might repeat a size to help children understand the difference.
Helping to link concepts to experiences - Encourage children to think about how what they are doing links with their previous experiences at home or nursery.
Planning and organising numeracy provision so children receive ample opportunities.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Numeracy skills
Numeracy skills can present them selves in many ways, everything we do with children has an element of numeracy development.

  • Pattern Making
  • Number lines
  • Abacus
  • Counting bears
  • Share Sorter

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

5 minute quick maths
Can you rise to the challenge?

You have 5 minutes to add everyone's age without a calculator.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Literacy Skills
Pre - reading skills
There are many resources available to support reading development.
  • Sound snap and bingo
  • Matching letter activities
  • Letter identification
However, using the EYFS we are able to be more creative therefore are able to use a combination of bought and homemade resources.
  • Story sequencing and puzzles
  • Picture ques
  • Decoding games
  • Irregular word and pattern games.
  • Stories and rhymes
  • Sharing a story with adults/peers

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Early writing skills
In Early Years we see many 'early writing skills' that are sensory based helping children explore their co - ordination and motor skills.
  1.  Role Play
  2. Play dough
  3. Cutting & Sticking
  4. Painting
  5. Oblique / gloop
  6. Tracing / dot to dot.

Early mark making occurs from as young as 6 months.

This may be on a piece of paper, on the floor, outside in the garden or on an object or surface.
Practitioners should provide children stimulating opportunities to support their co – ordination.

Jerome Bruner

In the last few weeks we explored Jerome Bruner's theory.
List in your groups how his theory can be used to support literacy and numeracy skills.

(Refer to Element 2 - Session 11)

It's time for a change !
Grasshopers is in need a refresh!

On the walls / windows / display boards, I would like you to create either a numeracy or literacy activity that others can actually play.

If you are thinking of using the walls or display boards create an activity using backing to prevent damage to the classroom.
Examples to consider:
Height chart / suduko / dot to dot / word search / fill in the gaps
