Exploring Hooke's Law: The Science of Springs

Learning objective

What do you already know about how springs work and stretch?

What is Hooke's Law?

Hooke's Law states that the force needed to extend a spring is proportional to the distance it is stretched: F = kx.

The Spring Constant

The spring constant (k) measures spring stiffness. A higher k means a stiffer spring. Units: N/m.

Force vs. Extension Graph

A Force vs. Extension graph is a straight line through the origin, showing proportionality.

Limit of Proportionality

Beyond the limit, Hooke's Law no longer applies. The spring may not return to its original shape.

Practical Applications

Hooke’s Law applies to various fields: engineering, design, biomechanics, and everyday gadgets.
