British Empire

On the next slide you'll find an empty world map. Take a screenshot of it and do the following:

1) Circle the heart of the British Empire.

2) Colour all countries that you think were once part of the British Empire.

Can you perhaps provide a reason (or reasons) for how the English were able to expand their empire to such a massive extent?

Keep in mind that the British Empire was at its peak around the start of the 20th century.

Given what you now know about England's colonial history, could you take a guess at how many different nationalities London is home to currently?

Why exactly did we discuss this?

1) to highlight that the British Empire has affected many different people, cultures and languages worldwide.

2) to highlight that the English language extends beyond just British, American, Australian etc.
