Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will explain different forms of energy, give examples, and understand the Law of Conservation of Energy.

What is Energy?

Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. Everything we do needs energy!

Why Do We Need Energy?

We need energy to move, keep warm, power machines, and light our homes.

Forms of Energy

There are many forms of energy: kinetic, potential, thermal, electrical, chemical, sound, and light.

Kinetic Energy

Kinetic energy is energy of movement. Runners, cars, and rolling balls have kinetic energy.

Potential Energy

Potential energy is stored energy. Examples are a stretched rubber band or water at the top of a hill.

Thermal Energy

Thermal energy is heat energy. It comes from moving particles. Hot tea, stoves, and the Sun give thermal energy.

Electrical Energy

Electrical energy comes from moving electrons. It powers our lights, TVs, and phones.

Chemical Energy

Chemical energy is stored in food, fuel, and batteries. We get it by eating and burning fuels.

Sound Energy

Sound energy is made when something vibrates, like a bell or a speaker.

Light Energy

Light energy helps us see. The Sun, bulbs, and screens give off light energy.

How Energy Changes Form

Energy can change form, like electrical energy turning into light and heat in a bulb.

Example: Lightbulb

A lightbulb turns electrical energy into light energy (and some heat!).

The Law of Conservation of Energy

Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It only changes from one form to another.
