What is pride month?
• Pride Month happens in June because that is when the Stonewall riots
 happened (28th June 1969)

• Christopher Street Liberation Day Parades would happen every year to commemorate Stonewall

• In 1971 and 1972 more and more cities had pride marches, including Atlanta, New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and London. The first Pride march in Hyde Park took place on July 1, 1972

What are the Stonewall Riots?
The Stonewall riots (also known as the Stonewall rebellion, or simply Stonewall) were a series of spontaneous riots and demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan in New York City. Although the demonstrations were not the first time American LGBTQ people fought back against government-sponsored persecution of sexual minorities, the Stonewall riots marked a new beginning for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.

Compton's Cafeteria Riot
1966
The Compton's Cafeteria riot occurred in August 1966 in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. The riot was a response to the violent and constant police harassment of trans people, particularly trans women, and drag queens. Cross-dressing was illegal and police would use that as a reason to raid the
bar

History of language: "Trans"
Early 20th Century: Terms like "transvestite" and "transsexual" were used, often with negative connotations.

1960s: The term "transgender" emerged, initially used in medical contexts and by activists.

Late 20th Century: "Trans" became a shortened, more widely used term, and "pride" began to be embraced as a positive term within the LGBTQ+ community.

1990s: "Pride" was increasingly used in the context of LGBTQ+ marches and events.

2000s: The phrase "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month" was formally adopted, reflecting a broader recognition of the LGBTQ+ community.

History of LGB:

Early Usage: Terms like "Lesbian," "Gay," and "Bisexual" have been used for centuries to describe different aspects of same-gender attraction and sexual orientation. The specific acronyms GLB and GLBT emerged in the 1960s and 70s as the gay rights movement gained momentum.

LGB's Rise: The LGB acronym gained widespread adoption in the 1990s, likely influenced by Third Wave Feminism and its emphasis on diversity and intersectionality. The HIV/AIDS epidemic also played a role, as lesbians stepped forward to advocate for and care for gay men.

Evolution to LGBT: In the late 1990s, the "T" for transgender was added to the acronym, reflecting the growing understanding and acceptance of gender identity within the LGBTQ+ community.
Continued Evolution: Today, the LGBTQ+ acronym continues to evolve, with the addition of letters like "Q" for queer and "A" for asexual or intersex, reflecting a broader understanding of sexuality and gender identity.

Lingering Impact: The evolution of terminology highlights the ongoing process of reclaiming language and challenging negative stereotypes within the LGBTQ+ community.
