Shaping landscapes 4.6:
Wind erosion and human effects

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Slide 2 - Video

Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Sediments sink downwards
When the river deposits more material than the sea can remove it, sediment plumes are formed
River slows down in lower course and can no longer carry the sediments

Slide 3 - Sleepvraag

Describe in your own words how hurricanes are formed (use full sentences!)

Slide 4 - Open vraag

Goals
After studying this section, you will be able to:

- Explain how wind forms the landscape
- Explain how human actions contribute to wind erosion

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Wind erosion
No plant roots that hold the soil together.
Easy for the wind to blow the dry soil away.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Why are plants so effective against wind erosion?

1. Plants slow the wind down at ground level, which makes it is more difficult for the wind to “grab” the sediment.

2. The roots of the plants hold soil together, wind cannot move it easily.

Talking point

Many of the countries dealing with desertification are LEDCs. These countries might not have a lot of money to prevent soil erosion.

What would you advise their governments?

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Which process took place in this picture?
A
Wind erosion
B
Fluvial erosion
C
Glacier erosion
D
Chemical weathering
