Reading strategies: Skimming

- Only the main ideas of a text.

You read the first paragraph and after that just the first sentence of each paragraph. 

This gives you an indication what the text is about and where to look for more specific information.

Tip: Look at the answers

Sometimes there are several answers that are almost right. Make sure you pick the solution that is the most correct.

Take some time to recheck questions like this.

3 Staff should _____ to find people to share a car with them.

1. Go online
2. visit the human resources department
3. speak to their departmental manager

4 After April 1st, Car Park C will be for...

1. Staff only
2. Visitors only
3. Staff and visitors

5 The cost to park in Car Park C for 8 hours will be...

1. 8 pounds
2. 13 pounds
3. 18 pounds

Tip: Weird answers

You're not likely to find the right answer in something humorous. Answers that include the terms always or never are also unlikely to be correct. You may also find questions with multiple answers that seem almost the same, only restated in different terms. These are probably wrong.

Final tips

- Before you spend too much time on one passage, make sure you look over the entire test.

- Answer easy questions first, this gives you confidence!
