Massage Mediums & Legal Framework

Selecting Appropriate Mediums

Oils & Creams

Choose based on skin type, condition, and treatment objectives. Consider absorption rates and client preferences.

Lotions & Gels

Ideal for different skin types and seasonal variations. Lighter formulations for sensitive skin.

Powders

Useful for specific techniques and clients who prefer non-greasy alternatives. E.g. Cream powder

Oil-Free

Used when a light, non-greasy feel is preferred, often better for oily or acne-prone skin.

Thicker texture that gives more grip and control, ideal for deep tissue or sports massage.

Wax/Balm

Salon & Treatment Area Hygiene

Group Activity

Task: In groups of 4, discuss and list your expectations for a clean, hygienic salon environment.

Daily Deep Cleaning

Clean the entire salon thoroughly every day, with treatment areas cleaned before and after each client.

Fresh Linens Protocol

Use clean, fresh towels for every client. All dirty linens must be laundered at minimum 60-90°C to eliminate bacteria.

Product Dispensing

Use pump or spray bottles when possible, or clean disposable spatulas for jars. Always replace lids immediately.

Equipment & Waste

Sterilise all tools between clients and empty bins regularly, disposing of contents appropriately.

The Five Fundamental Massage Movements

Effleurage

Stroking movements - Long, flowing strokes to warm tissues and begin treatment

Petrissage

Kneading techniques - Deeper manipulation to work muscle fibres and improve flexibility

Tapotement

Percussion movements - Rhythmic tapping to stimulate and invigorate tissues

Vibrations

Oscillatory techniques - Fine trembling movements for relaxation and nerve stimulation

Frictions

Circular pressure - Deep, concentrated movements for specific tension areas

Massage Movements: Effleurage

The Foundation Movement

Effleurage is performed with light, even pressure in a rhythmical, continuous manner. This versatile technique serves as the cornerstone of professional massage therapy.

Proper Technique

Use the palmar surface of your hands, contouring around body shapes with consistent pressure and steady rhythm. Pressure varies according to muscle bulk but remains gentle.

Initial Contact

Introduces therapist's hands to client's body, establishing trust and comfort.

Medium Application

Applies massage oil or lotion evenly across treatment areas.

Movement Linking

Seamlessly connects different massage techniques throughout the session.

Effleurage: Therapeutic Effects

Muscle Relaxation

Relaxes tense muscle fibres and prepares tissues for deeper therapeutic work.

Circulation Boost

Increases blood flow, improving skin temperature and healthy colouration.

Lymphatic Drainage

Enhances lymphatic circulation, helping remove metabolic waste products.

Skin Renewal

Aids desquamation process, gently removing dead skin cells for healthier skin.

These combined effects create the perfect foundation for more intensive massage techniques while promoting overall client wellness.

Petrissage: The Deeper Touch

Advanced Technique Requirements

Petrissage is performed only on warm, already-relaxed muscle tissue. This deeper massage movement requires careful attention to pressure and rhythm.

Technical Application

Use palmar surface, fingers, or thumbs with slow, rhythmical movements. Adjust pressure according to muscle bulk and individual tension levels - never rush this process.

Always ensure muscles are properly warmed before applying petrissage techniques.

Petrissage: Therapeutic Benefits

Cellular Stimulation

Stimulates skin at cellular level, improving function and regeneration processes.

Enhanced Circulation

Increases blood and lymphatic circulation, improving waste removal and skin tone.

Muscle Conditioning

Improves muscle tone through compression and relaxation, targeting larger contracted muscles.

"Petrissage transforms surface relaxation into deep therapeutic muscle conditioning."

Kneading and Wringing Techniques

Kneading

A circular technique moving skin and underlying structures in rotating motions. Tissue is systematically lifted, rolled away from bone, then compressed back with squeezing action.

Wringing

Soft tissues are compressed against underlying structures before lifting. One hand's fingers pull tissue away while the opposite thumb pushes back toward structures.

Technique Adaptation

For smaller tissue areas, use fingertips and thumbs only. Larger areas require more hand surface for effective wringing movements.

Skin Rolling Technique

Abdomen

Gentle lifting and rolling motion promotes tissue mobility and circulation

Thighs

Effective for breaking down adhesions and improving tissue flexibility

Back

Comprehensive coverage along muscle groups for optimal therapeutic benefit

Skin rolling involves lifting and rolling skin between fingers and thumbs of both hands. This manipulation can be carefully adapted around joints with appropriate modifications for client safety and comfort.

Tapotement: Percussion Techniques

Tapotement operates through nerve response, with the strongest effects due to tendon reflexes. Movement should be rapid, light, sharp and springy.

Hand Position

Keep hands close to body, no more than one inch away from treatment area

Wrist Action

Maintain loose wrists with rapid, springy movements for optimal effect

Muscle Engagement

Forearm muscles contract and relax in succession, moving elbow into flexion then quick release

Tapotement Effects and Cupping

Primary Effects

  • Increases circulation throughout treated areas

  • Stimulates skin and muscle reflexes

  • Creates desired therapeutic massage effects

Cupping Technique

Shape the entire palmer hand into a "cup" by slightly flexing fingers and adducting thumb to index finger. The loose rhythmic wrist action creates the distinctive sound while the palm center doesn't contact the client.

Safety Precautions

Avoid cupping over: Bony protuberances, superficial nerves, paralyzed muscles, or during pregnancy. When uncertain, seek professional guidance.

Advanced Tapotement Variations

Tapping

Gentle fingertip contact producing hollow sounds. Ideal for delicate areas including head and face. Light intensity with finger variation.

Hacking

Applied to fleshy body parts only. Avoid bony areas, superficial nerves, paralyzed muscles, and pregnancy applications.

Pounding

Limited to substantial muscle areas like thighs. Same safety restrictions as hacking technique apply.

Each variation requires careful consideration of client condition, treatment area, and therapeutic goals. Professional judgment guides technique selection for optimal safety and effectiveness.

Friction: Deep Tissue Manipulation

Technique Application

Applied with finger cushions or palm using firm pressure that moves skin over underlying tissue. Performed in circular motions, typically clockwise, before moving to new areas.

Critical: Always follow friction with effleurage to soothe treated areas and facilitate toxin removal.

Toxin Release

Eliminates harmful buildup accumulated in body tissues

Tissue Softening

Loosens hardened tissues around joints and tendons

Deposit Breakdown

Removes unwanted tissue deposits through targeted pressure

Vibration: Subtle Therapeutic Movement

A specialized technique involving rhythmic pressing and releasing in "up and down" movements. Applied through fine trembling motions using palmar surfaces or fingertips of one or both hands.

Nerve Soothing

Calms irritated nerve pathways

Scar Tissue

Helps loosen restrictive scar formations

Muscle Relaxation

Particularly effective for forearm tension

Circulation

Stimulates blood flow and glandular activity

While not commonly used, vibration provides targeted therapeutic benefits. Specific effects depend on anatomical application site and client presentation.
