GENITIVE

* add 's if the word does not end in an s

* add ' if the word ends in an s

* if the word is a name which ends in an s both is possible

This is John's car.

DOUBLE GENITIVE

John's friend = A friend of John's

                      = A friend of his

My sisters' friends = Friends of my sisters'

                             = Friends of theirs 

RULE

We form the 'double genitive' with

noun + of + possessive pronoun (MINE/YOURS/HIS/HERS/OURS/YOURS/THEIRS)

A friend of his

OR 

noun + of +possessive adjective (MY/YOUR/HIS/HER/OUR/YOUR/THEIR) + noun + possessive 's

A friend of my brother's
