Will look shiny and can smell
Very white scalp. May be white flakes on the scalp

Effleurage is a technique you can use on all hair types
It is used during shampooing and conditioning to spread the products
This is a smoothing, stroking movement which start and finishes the massage routine and relaxes the client

Technique used for shampooing
Using the pads of the fingers in a claw like shape its round circular movement
Stimulates the scalp
Removes dirt and grease
Can be used on all hair types when shampooing
To avoid tangling use at root area only on longer hair

Friction 
Light quicker movements used when shampooing to stimulate the scalp
Do not use this technique on long or sparse hair
Ideal on short or thick hair

Petrissage 
Used when conditioning or applying scalp treatments
This is a deep kneading massage movement which stimulates the scalp and encourages blood flow and relaxes the client
The scalp massage will manipulate the skin and muscles
Be careful on long hair or tangling may occur

When- Before a chemical service
Why- To check the strength of the Cortex
How- Take a few strands of hair damp the hair down gently stretch the hair
Outcome- checking the hair to see if it returns to its natural state
Consequences- Breakage, damage to the hair

Why- To check for raise Cuticles 
How- Take a few strands of hair, gently run fingers from point to root down the hair shaft 
Outcome- If the hair feels smooth it is in good condition, if it feels rough then it is in bad condition
Consequences-  Damage to the hair

Incompatibility Test 
When -Before a chemical service- 
Why- To check if metallic salts are present
How- Take a small cutting piece and place in 
20mls of liquid 6% (20Vol) Hydrogen peroxide with approximately 6 drops of perm lotion.
 Outcome- You are checking to see if there is any fizzing, bubbles on the surface or if the hair disintegrates. 
Consequences- Damage to the hair and the hair may distegrate

Strand Test 
When -During the service
Why- To check the development of colour 
How- Gently wipe the colour away with cotton wool 
 Outcome- To check the development of the colour 
Consequences- Damage to the hair and the hair may disintegrate

Skin Test 
When -Before a chemical service
Why- To check for an allergic reaction 
How- Wipe the area behind the ear with surgical spirit, apply a small amount of colour. Inform client to leave for 24-48 hours
 Outcome- If there is a reaction they must inform GP and the salon
Consequences- Client will have an allergic reaction

When - During the service
Why- To check the development of the perm 
How-  Gently unwind a roller. Check for a 'S' shape 
 Outcome-  To check the development of the perm 
Consequences- Under or Over Processed.
