• = Identification with one's own nation and support for its interests.
• Tension between France & Germany after the Franco-Prussian war

 Colonialism

• = The act of one nation controlling another for economic gain.
• Emperor Wilhelm II wanted 'place under the sun' for Germany

Militarism

• = Believing that you need a strong army.
• This leeds to an arms race
• Alliances are formed
• central powers & Triple Entente

Von Schlieffenplan

• German strategy named after
    general Von Schlieffen.
• Goal was to avoid a two-front war

The Balkans

• Lots of tension in the Balkans
• Austria-Hungary had internal strugles
