Acid + Metal → Salt + Hydrogen
When acids react with metals, they form a salt and release hydrogen gas. Example: Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂↑. Test for hydrogen using the pop test.
Pre-Assessment: Gases from Reactions
When passed through limewater, CO₂ turns it milky. This tests for CO₂ typically in acid-carbonate reactions.
A burning splint creates a 'pop' sound in the presence of hydrogen gas. This tests if hydrogen is produced during an acid-metal or base-metal reaction.

Acid + Base → Salt + Water
This is a classic neutralisation reaction. Example: HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O. No gas evolved; only salt and water are formed.
Base + Metal → Salt + Hydrogen
Some bases (like NaOH) react with certain metals (like Zinc,aluminium) to form salt and hydrogen gas. Example:
