Review Past Simple

• When do we use the PAST SIMPLE?
• What are the KEYWORDS (signaalwoorden)?
• How do we make the past simple?

Past Simple

When?	Finished action - no longer going on!
Signal words (WALDY) when, ago, last, date, year	Last Friday/weekend/year, etc; yesterday; a second/minute/day/week ago
How?	Verb (hele ww) + -d/ed/ied
Example	I talk ed / She phon ed / We stud ied

Past Simple - Spelling changes

Verb ends in -e (like 'use')	add -d
Short verb ends in consonant-vowel-consonant (like 'plan')	Double consonant and add -ed
Verbs ending in vowel (klinker) + y (like 'play')	Add -ed
Verb ends in consonant (medeklinker) + y (like 'try')	Change 'y' into 'ie' and add -d

 Positive Sentences

Present simple

The teacher talks all day	The teacher talked all day
The woman screams very loudly	The woman screamed very loudly
Look! Yes, I see that.	Look! Yes, I saw that
She catches butterflies in her spare time	She caught butterlies in her spare time

Negative Sentences

Present simple	Past simple - negative
Do you see that? No I don't	Did you see that? No I didn't
He is not my best friend	He was not my best friend
I am not happy	I wasn't ( was not) happy
He leaves early	He didn't leave early
He buys a laptop	He didn't buy a laptop

Past simple - Questions

• For questions, ‘Do’ changes into ’did’
  
  

• After ‘did’, always use the infinitive (hele werkwoord)

For a form of ‘to be’ (= am/is/are), 

use: (was/were)

Past Simple - Questions

Do you like the movie?	Did you like the movie?
Where are you?	Where were you?
Is he always like that?	Was he always like that?
How are you doing?	How were you doing?
Is that your cousin over there?	Was that your cousin over there?
Do you know where I can find her?	Did you know where I can find her?

Negative sentences

For a negation, you need to use ‘not’ gebruiken. Put 'not' behind 'did'.

Remember to use 'did' in the past simple, and not 'do'!
Do not  = don’t
Did not = didn’t

Past Simple

Word order in the past simple:

1. Yesterday we walked home.
1. We walked home yesterday

2. Beyonce was on the cover of Vogue last month.

2. Last month Beyonce was on the cover of Vogue.
