Formal writing in a nutshell
  • Formal language → more 'expensive' wording
  • No contractions → can’t = cannot / won’t = will not
  • Do not use questions
  • In an essay → do not use ‘I’
  • Use linking words
  • Focus on lay-out: Empty line between each paragraph

You have tried to call the company, but nobody picked up. You have written a letter but haven't got any responses. 
Write the second letter of complaint to this company.
(You may also think of your own situation if you want)

1. Focus on the most important facts. Don’t give unnecessary/personal background information.

2. Make sure you include:
• the reason for writing (e.g. I am writing to ...)
• what went wrong
• what you would like to happen now.

3. Use passives to be less direct and more formal, e.g. I was served quickly.
