It started in the past and it didn't stop.

Past simple:

yesterday, last month, etc.

 regular verbs = verb+ ed

irregular verbs = learn by hart

Past continuous:

was/were + verb + ing

These forms are often used in one sentence. Something was going on and then something else happened.

happened = past simple                                    was going = past continuous
